Field Station Facilities

The Shortgrass Steppe Research and Interpretation Center, the new multi-institutional field station for research, education and natural resource interpretation of the shortgrass steppe ecosystem, is located on the CPER, approximately 13 km north of Nunn, Colorado, along US Highway 85, on Weld County Road 114.

Colorado State University has just completed Phase I of the new facilities, which includes a classroom/conference building housing two seminar rooms with a 270-degree view of the grasslands to the Front Range. Each seminar room is AV equipped and holds up to 50 people; the rooms may be combined to hold a group of 100. A computer room, with a capacity of 15 individuals, may be used for modeling workshops in addition to its use for data analyses. A catering kitchen is available for serving group meals. Reasonable fees are assessed for use of the facility and are scaled according to the user (no charge for CSU and UNC classes). Phase I also includes two newly constructed 5-bedroom, 3-bathroom houses located adjacent to the classroom/conference building. Each house is equipped with a full kitchen and is situated to provide spectacular views from large porches. We are working to raise funding for four additional houses to increase our on-site housing capacity to 60. Site visitors may also find housing in Greeley, Fort Collins or Cheyenne.

Within walking distance of the new field station, are the headquarters originally built to support research conducted for the US/International Biome Project in the 1970s for the grassland biome. These facilities include a multipurpose building with offices, laboratories, a dining/meeting room, and kitchen and a storage and sample processing building that serves as the workshop and garage for heavy equipment and a location for washing, drying and storing samples.

Visitors are welcome at our field station and research sites. Arrange a visit.
